Fashion Critique: Clown ruffles or Franken-dress?

These lovely ladies ensembles have been making the round on all the fashion sites and I can see why. Both are interesting choices.

Zooey Deschanel’s (left) Stella McCartney dress has been compared to clown attire. Black and white on it’s own is a bold combination but the addition of a ruffled collar and peplum heightens it. I actually like the dress but I think the whole look was styled poorly. Here’s what I would do to make it work on Zooey:

  • Someone needs to teach her proper posture. You can not wear a bold dress and not look 100% confident in it. She looks slightly hesitant and the poor posture only serves to amplify this. The dress is wearing her instead of the other way around.
  • Next up, appropriate underpinnings. She needs a better bra and if she isn’t wearing one, she should be. Get your breasts back up where they belong girl.
  • There is far too much going on around her beautiful face and it’s closing it in. Since she has long hair, the up-do is necessary with this collar which I’m glad she chose to do. Zooey is known for her bangs but for this collar she really should sweep them to one side so we can see some forehead. That would open up the face and balance the busy neckline.
  • I love the shoes. They’re understated which is appropriate for everything else going on. The clutch, however, is a bit of a bore. I would like to see her do something different than obvious and trite black. It was a missed opportunity for a little color however slight. The blush pink vintage clutch I discovered recently in an antique mall would be a great choice.

I’m not sure I even know what to say about Elizabeth Bank’s Prada dress. I keep hoping for a press release to come out stating someone punked the Prada house. It just goes to show you that even good designers make mistakes. There is no fixing bad design. It looks as if two completely unrelated dresses were split and the front of one was reattached to the back of the other in a fit of drunken studio debauchery. But your hair and shoes are fabulous Elizabeth. Praise God for the small things.
